The most highlighted passage on the Amazon Kindle eBook device is:
…the more money they made the next day on the streets. Those three things—autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and reward—are, most people agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying. It is not how much money we make that ultimately makes us happy between nine and five. It’s whether our work fulfills us.
From the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Full list via MR and @willwilkinson.
It’s interesting to me that Amazon collects usage stats from the kindle. I wonder if you can turn it off.
I don’t agree with the quote. I had all of those 3 things in my last job but it paid nearly minimum wage and I was still unhappy. You need to make a livable wage to enjoy life, and also for the job to be worthwhile.
great, so amazon is reading what we are reading. sounds like an advertisers dream. im not normally a conspiracy kinda guy, but does amazon tell you they are tracking what you read? that sort of creaps me out… if i turn the pages too slowly does that tell them I am dumb…
It’s a powerful quote, so no surprise on the status as the #1 most cited passage on Kindle.
Money is just an object if there’s nothing behind it. Yes! we need it to survive and we want the things it affords us. But in the end, we don’t take it with us.
Work is something we also need to survive and since most of us spend a great deal of time, “doing it”. It’s best when it fulfills us, and those who have it – should be so lucky.
That’s a great book and a great quote.
Money is not everything. That’s why there are billionaires who are depressed and lonely. There is more to just having tons of money and that quote sums it up well.
