Here are our results our Target Budget Areas for October:
Overall, a solid showing. Most importantly, we had minimal miscellaneous expenses, which includes stuff like clothing, household things, pet care, travel, medical – all those little things that add up quick. Gas and entertainment were okay. I felt like we ate out a lot last month, but I we were still close to our total food cost goal.
One thing I have noticed is that we are consistently eating at home over the last few months. Doing these little checkups every month really does help you feel trends and give you more awareness of spending habits. I want to re-examine our Target Areas this month, maybe change up some of the budget goal amounts, and even add some more categories to track. If that works, I might even try tracking everything (not just mainly credit card spending like the above) with Quicken or Money again. Maybe.
I love to use Money! It’s great for keeping track of everything and I love being able to update my account through Money instead of having to enter everything manually or go to the banks’ websites and download the data.
Every time I use Money or Quicken, I either fall horribly behind or get so many duplicate transactions through their sync’ing it just becomes a mess. Mainly because I have too many credit cards and bank accounts 😉 Which is ironic because that’s the whole reason I bought the software. Sigh.
Which version are you using? I rarely have duplicate transactions as I let it update them for me, and just check receipts off as they are put in. It’s great for keeping a budget and it’s great cause you can update online while you’re away from your computer so during vacation, trips, etc you can keep track more easily without getting off track. I’m using Money 2006 Primier…from what I remember, you can get it at Costco with a couple rebates that make it free. Check FW if it’s still valid.
