Here are some quick freebies and bonuses. Enjoy!

  • Register.com is offering a free domain name (1 year) for small businesses. I couldn’t think of a good name just now, but I went pretty far and didn’t find any catches.
  • Buy.com is offering a 1gb Secure Digital memory card for free + free shipping if you are a new Google Checkout customer. Via reader TM.
  • HSBC Direct is offering a $25 bonus for paying 3 bills online via their Online Payment account by January 31, 2008.

  1. The Google Checkout bonus appears to have a timeframe restriction for qualifying. The bonus didn’t apply when I tried, and I am new to Google Checkout.

    Fine Print on Google Help:

“It’s also possible that your order did not qualify for the $10 bonus — here are a few reasons your order might not qualify:

You signed up for Google Checkout outside of the promotional offer time frame.
Accounts must have been created between January 5, 2007 and March 29, 2007 (bonus expired April 30, 2007) or between March 30, 2007 and May 15, 2007 (bonus expires June 30, 2007).”

    Oh well….

  2. Buy.com is offering $10 off (almost) any order with Google Checkout. That’s a free 1GB SD card, or a $5 2GB USB drive (both with free shipping).

You MUST sign up for Google Checkout _after_ you’re ready to order and choose to use Google Checkout (then you’ll be given the option to create a new account with Google Checkout). Unfortunately, I went to Google Checkout to sign up for an account _before_ checking out at Buy.com… and now they won’t give me $10 off :(.

I am the one that submitted the offer to Jonathan via e-mail. I got the free card being shipped to me. You are correct, you need to agree to purchase the item, then choose the Google Checkout afterwards. Only do this is you have never used Google Checkout before, or have signed up for it previously.

  4. Well, I convinced my brother to sign up with Google Checkout the way I described above… but it didn’t work for him, either :(. I think that MJ’s right that this promotion is over but Buy.com just hasn’t noticed yet…

  5. I had the same issue as MJ. Just used my gmail address to sign-up as a new Google checkout member. No $10 discount applied. I wonder if you have to create a new Google account?

  6. I tried the free SD card and followed the instructions but at the end of the process I still got “Place your order now – USD10.00”. As far as I know this is the first time I ever tried to use Google Checkout.

I don’t know what it will be for or what I’m gonna do with it, but I’m getting a free domain name lol. Thanks for the tip Jonathan have a great weekend.

  8. I did the free domain and everything seemed in order. They do automatically add $9 for Privacy Protection but you can easily remove that from your Shopping Cart. I used a virtual credit card number in case a charge is made.

  9. About HSBC. What is “Online Payment account “? I have “Online savings” and “Free checking” with HSBC. Do I qualify if I make 3 online bill payments from my “Free checking”? Probably not.

I can not find “Online Payment account” at HSBC site. I found it only at:

News Release HSBC DIRECT ENHANCES OFFERING WITH NEW WAY TO EARN HIGHER INTEREST ON EVERY DOLLAR, EVERY DAY
    – 2.50% APY Payment Account Maximizes Earnings on Everyday Funds — Instant Fund Transfers Allow for Increased Fluidity Into 5.05% APY OSA -29 May 2007

Jonathan, how did you get this HSBC bonus web-page?

  10. More info about Online Payment Account from a previous blog post (will add link to post as well).

I got the link via an e-mail directly from HSBC.

  11. I created a new Gmail account to take advantage of the Google Checkout promotion, but still haven’t received anything yet. 😕

  12. CitiBank is offering a $200 bonus for opening EasyChecking with a $100 deposit.

Agree to pay at least two bills online each month. $100 is credited after 3 months and $100 is credited after the subsequent 3 months.

The number to call is 1-866-810-9043 and mention code MVS4.

  13. I tried to get the free domain name, but a check-out it shows a cost of $35/year. Can’t seem to figure out how to get it for $0. What’s the trick?

  14. How much after the 1st free year with the free domain?

  15. The Buy.com promotion is still running; I ordered my SD card last night and it shipped this morning. Keep in mind the bonus will only work if you are a new Google Checkout customer. I recommend creating a Google account via the checkout page; it worked quickly and easily for me. Also, you can use any email address when you sign up – you don’t need a gmail address.

  16. I got the free domain, but register.com has crappy design templates, so I used Google Apps (free) to build my website. 🙂

  17. I just ordered the Buy.com/Google Checkout 1GB SD card for free no problem. Clicked the link, added it to the cart, hit checkout, then filled out a form for a google checkout account, selected free shipping and it works no problem.

  18. I got an email today from Google Checkout saying that I should have been credited the $10 but wasn’t and that it has now been credited to me. I was now able to buy the SD card for $0. Try it again if you are still interested.

  19. I’m a little confused about the domain registration. After I register a domain, how do I use my own hosting service for the domain name?

  20. My host only allows me to have one domain! How can I forward this domain without the register.com banner at the bottom? Or even better, any free hosts out there that are ad free?

The buy.com offer is still valid. I just found this link to a page with lots of options on this offer. This will give you a wider choice of what you want to purchase, not just the SD card. Ingrid was correct on the order you need to do this. You add the item to your cart, choose Google Checkout (only do this if you have not previously signed up for it), and proceed to complete the order. The receipt from buy.com will still show the price as $10 bucks, but the one’s you get from Google will show the amount at $0.00. Here is the link. . .

    Happy Holidays!

  22. I unfortunately jumped at the chance to do this and went straight to Google Checkout to start an account AND THEN went to Buy.com to find something and use my discount, which some others of you did I think. That negates the discount. Like all said, you must sign up for the Google Checkout account as a first time person WHILE YOU’RE CHECKING OUT WITH BUY.COM. Oh well.

But, you can pick several things, not just the SD card. Like that snappy Kensington 1gb flash drive I was trying to get.

the HSBC bonuses in general are awful. i still haven’t received mine for opening a checking/payment account in august. the local hsbc rep in sf keeps stalling and said they have to issue a 1099 or something first before they can deposit the promo into my account.

For anyone that completed the Bill Pay bonus, but didn’t receive their $25 yet…

I hadn’t seen my bonus yet after completing the requirements in January. All is did is logged on to my account and sent a brief email to customer service asking when I would receive my bonus. One day later, I received the following message:

“Thank you for contacting HSBC Direct, where our goal is to help you reach your financial goals faster. I have received your request for the $25.00 Bill Pay Bonus. I have researched your inquiry and determined that you did make the required bill payments from your Online Payment Account. The $25.00 will be credited to your account within 3 business days.”

One day after that, $25 was deposited into my Online Payment Account. Yes, I had to email them to get it, but at least they didn’t hassle me at all. Just a tip in case any of you are still waiting…
