Here’s another creative idea for a website. GiveawayOfTheDay.com lets you download a fully-licensed, no-trial, no-shareware version of some neat software. The catch is that it is only available for one day, during which you must both download and activate the software on you computer. Also targeted at the Windows OS.
The developer of the software gets some good publicity, feedback on their product, and the opportunity to earn money down the road with future license upgrades. If you think about it, most people who download the product this way were probably not going to buy it anyways.
Today’s download is PDFZilla, which converts PDFs into “editable MS Word Documents, Rich Text Documents, Plain Text Files, Images, HTML Files, and Shockwave Flash SWF Files.” Of course, you probably won’t find something useful to you every day, but it’s worth adding the feed to your RSS reader. There was some DVD authoring software that looked promising a couple days ago.
good find!
This is a great site. I’ve been downloading software from here for a long time now. A few things to keep in mind:
1. You must install the software the same day you download.
2. Don’t go crazy and download every program every day. Tempting, but it will just clog up your system. Ask yourself if it is something you really need.
3. Read the comments before you install. Some are obviously from the software company. Some are obviously from rival software companies. But most are legit and you will get a good feel for the program before you install.
4. Remember that if you have a system crash and need to reinstall or upgrade to a new computer, those programs you’ve come to rely on won’t be available unless you buy them.
5. The software you are getting for free is generally the last generation. Companies are willing to offer v3.0 for free after they release v4.0. This isn’t a bad thing, particularly if you have an older system. But if you need the latest and greatest, buy the upgrade.
6. If you aren’t sure … download and install. The programs GOTD offers are virus free and usually problem free. These are real programs and they work as advertised. Install it and try it … you can always uninstall if you find you don’t use it or if it doesn’t do what you need.
My idea of Free Software runs more this way http://talc.truman.edu/pub/fsck/freecd/doc/
I also have been using the site for a while and got a couple of software that I need. Though they are not latest, it’s good to get it for free 🙂
Excellent site! I payed attention to this site few months ago and try not to miss each day’s proposal.
So which is better, PDFCreator that is mentioned in the ‘How to 0% APR credit card’ section or this PDFZilla?
PDFZilla is a tool for reverse-engineering PDFs into Word docs. PDFCreator, I believe, is best for making webpages or Word docs into PDF files. They kind of do the opposite of the other. 🙂
Just downloaded AnyBizSoft PDF to HTML converter for free. and the PDF to Word converter cost only $9.95,the conversion quality is very good. What a bargin. Only on 15th September 2009
