The benefit of “old-school” desktop tax software is that it doesn’t require your Social Security Number and financial details to be stored in the “cloud”, a fancy word for a third-party server where it can be copied or hacked. Amazon often runs one-day deals on H&R Block Tax Software 2023 (PC/Mac download). Black Friday is usually one of them.

Amazon has H&R Block Deluxe Federal + State for $25 (Federal Deluxe $20).

H&R Block Deluxe includes guidance for stock gains and losses, home mortgage interest deduction, and other itemized deductions. All flavors include “Refund Bonus” where you can a 2% bonus if you take your refund in the form of an Amazon gift card.

Keep in mind that for these products 5 Federal e-Files are included but State e-File is extra ($19.95 per state). I would personally just print the (usually shorter) state return out and snail mail it in if you don’t have a free State e-File option.

    thanks for the tip. just bought the software. ive used HR block software the past few years anyway (and dont like doing it on the cloud)

    Great tip, I certainly dont want to have my SSN stored in any cloud, they get enough of our data without our knowledge, I prefer to make them work for it. Thanks for sharing!

    Novice question as I never bought and downloaded software from Amazon before: Can you download on multiple machines, or just one download one time?

      The top part “See how downloads work” says this:

      After purchase, you can download this item any time from Your Games and Software Library. The number of computers eligible for installation may vary.

      I know that TurboTax you just click on the download section within Amazon to get the program file as many times as you want, but you need the license code, and then you can activate the installation on up to 5 computers. It doesn’t say it explicitly for this Amazon page, but according to BestBuy.com product page for 2022 version, it appears to work the same:
