NCN shares a list of things he actually does to save money. Maybe you can pick up a few ideas.
If you are looking for more about online lending at Prosper, Lazy Man is starting his Prosper Week. He started by addressing some parts of my Prosper Review.
Mighty Bargain Hunter has a multiple-part review of the book Debt Is Slavery and how stuff will imprison you. It’s amazing how much junk I’ve accumulated after living in a house with a huge basement.
Got a crockpot? Trent shares some of his essential recipes. Am I the only person who doesn’t have one of these things? I don’t think I can handle any more kitchen appliances. Maybe if I throw away that old sandwich-maker…
Sometimes trying to save money can be tricky. Have you seen those places that offer $100 brake repair and a lifetime warranty? If you couldn’t smell the cow dung from a mile away, Golbguru has shared his own experience. Hint: It’s never just $100. That reminds me, our Nissan is nearing 100,000 miles as well.
Yes ur right….i went to this brake shop that said $89 lifetime brake…bla bla bla….in the end the bill was $430.
ah…brakes. i recently took my jetta to the dealer to get the overpriced 30k mile job done. well they call me up to tell me it’s double, or $1300 cause the brakes need to be completely rehauled. i balked and told them dont do the brakes. (they werent making noise or anything). so i took it to another national shop and he wanted 800 for the brakes (rotors, pads etc). i did read that the jetta’s rear rotors need to be replaced around 30k, so i took that as a third opinion. i talked him down to 650, but i still know i got screwed.
what else can i do, get third, fourth opinions?
sorry, i am already doing that with dentists around here- Nova. been to 3 in the past 18 months, all telling me different things…you have 3 cavities come on back, nope. your fillings need to be replaced, um nope (shouldnt those last 20 yrs, aka more than 8?). you need full exrays etc for tartar buildup, no thanks
Thanks for mentioning the brake repair post. I guess many people are in the same boat when it comes to *lifetime warranty* for brake jobs…that’s not very happy.
Ah well…back to searching for the ever elusive *honest car mechanic* 🙂
I heard an ad recently for Aamco, to give you a transmission fluid flush once a year for a one-time fee of $99.00. It’s so obvious, they bring you in once for the flush (you pay $99.00) and they see if anything else is wrong (I’m sure there will be). But even if there isn’t this time, you’ll come back to them every year for your “free” flush and eventually they’ll screw you. It’s pretty smart for them, very dumb for anyone else.
