Just a quick note that I finally updated this site’s design after many, many years. The primary goal of this redesign was to improve usability and readability across modern computer screens, which now span from 30″ widescreen monsters to 3.5″ smartphones. I’m also trying to improve navigation so that readers can easily find the more timeless posts amidst the many other time-sensitive posts. I still have a lot of work to do by going through my archives and cleaning things up.
Please let me know if anything is broken or just what you think of it. Thanks!
The new design definitely looks better.
It’s nitpicky, but your favicon (the icon that shows up either in the URL bar or on the tab in the browser) doesn’t have a transparent background, so it doesn’t look very good in Chrome on OSX.

@ydant – Thanks, I think I uploaded the wrong one and will try to find the transparent one, I’m pretty sure the one before was transparent but it got overwritten in the redesign.
(Hey first time using nested/threaded comments!)
love the site redesign and love the picture of you and you’re little girl.
@christine – Thanks! Someone called me a bot or something so I wanted to show that am a real, live boy.
YOUR little girl, not you’re (which is short for “you are”)
Yes, I know the difference. It was a typo, i’m sorry. (I am sorry)
@christine – Mary Christmas! π
@jonathan – great link – it literally blew my mind!

Great redesign Jonathan. Looks especially great on my iPhone.
@Chris – Thanks, that was one of my goals.
Clean and easy to read. Been following your site for years so I will miss those 3 icons on the top right. Keep up the good work.
@Nelson – Thanks, I might bring them back but I’d like something better π
So, do people like threaded comments or plain reverse chronological better?
Threaded as long as it doesn’t get too nested…. Over 4-6 deep and it doesn’t work well.
I prefer the threaded comments! It was getting tough to track back from your response to the original comments. This way is much easier π Looks good!!
Looks good, keep up the good writing!
Thanks!
Hi Jonathan,
The site looks great, well done. Wishing you well over the holiday season and best wishes for a great 2014.
Best regards,
Kevin
Thanks Kevin and Happy Holidays to you and your family as well!
Looks great Jonathan. There’s just one thing I’m missing from the old site: A visual highlight for your comments so I can quickly scan and see what you have said to others.
Good point. I have enabled Gravatars, and hopefully my avatar logo is distinctive enough to ask as a highlight. I’ll try out green comments too but I’m afraid it might look funny.
Wow…..I was almost going to find an old email of yours and advise you your site had been hijacked. π
Looks good, though I’m not a big fan of “change”. It’ll take a little getting used to but love the pic of you & your daughter. I always wondered what you looked like. I was way off! π
Hi Jonathan,
New site looks good, but I am still biased to your old site, simply because i am set in my ways π
keep it up
This looks great man!
I like threaded and your gravatar is distinct enough, I think people will get used to it over time. One thing that is very different is the amount of whitespace. As an engineer, I liked the tightness but I get why it is the way it is. π
Looks awesome, Jonathan. Although your old design was fine, I think the new design was long overdue! π
Woahhhh… feels weird not being frozen in time anymore! π
Great design, I still not getting used to it yet. I missed the search button on the top.
