Man, I ran across this hilarious and witty blog called Waiter Rant today, and I’ve already wasted way too much time reading it. My entire lunch (brown-bagged) actually, and then some.
Check out this post called Cheap Bastards, and you can see what waiters have to deal with. It’s the other side of tipping. It reminded me of my post on tipping guidelines. Just because you have a gift certificate doesn’t mean you don’t have to tip!!! And don’t be like Dr. Zamir. Anyways, watch out, it’s addictive reading.
Sorry, I found the guy to be vulgar and only interested in promoting his “you should tip at least 15% no matter how bad the service is” mentality. I won’t be back to his site again.
Yeah, he’s not afraid to voice his opinions. It is Waiter RANT after all. =) I don’t tip 15% for bad service, myself. But I do tip about 10%, since the busboys, hostess, etc. are in it as well. And if waiters think 15% in the minimum, they’ll get the clue that I thought the service sucked.
Still, some of the other stories not involving tipping are hilarious.
I don’t understand why the tip is a percentage of the bill.
Isn’t it the same amount of work to carry a $5 dish vs. a $50 one?
@ Joe – “Isn?t it the same amount of work to carry a $5 dish vs. a $50 one?”
It’s because they get get taxed according to price of the meal. The more expensive the meal, the more they get taxed. That’s also a reason to tip in cash even when you pay for the emal with a credit card. That way they can report the minimum (8% of the bill) instead of the whole tip. Remember, waitstaff hourly wages are way below the minimum wage.
