Update: Still on sale, but not as low as 12/27. As low as around Black Friday. The benefit of “old-school” desktop tax software is that it doesn’t require your Social Security Number and income details to be stored in the “cloud”, a fancy word for a third-party server where it can be copied or hacked.
As a post-Christmas deal, Amazon has TurboTax Deluxe 2023, Federal & State + $10 Amazon Gift Card Bundle for $54.99 in either Download or Disc versions. That’s a pretty solid net price for TurboTax these days. You also get 5 Federal e-Files so you can file taxes for other family member in your household. (Click here to view the Amazon links if you can’t see them.)
State e-File is extra ($20 per state). I would personally just print the (usually shorter) state return out and snail mail it in if you don’t have a free State e-File option.
Note that TurboTax Deluxe lets you manually input stock gain/loss information, but does not include “guidance”. For that, you’ll need TurboTax Premier 2023 Fed/State + $10 Amazon Gift Card Bundle for $74.99. This is what makes H&R Block Deluxe a more affordable alternative (as it does include guidance for stock sales) , if you are willing to make the switch. However, I also understand the urge to stick with what works.
will Deluxe allow me to download transactions from my fidelity brokage account?
Yes, here are TurboTax import partners:

Can I use it for a schedule C business?
You’ll need the business version if you want them to guide you through all the details of multiple transactions. Otherwise it may handle simple 1099-MISC forms.
Does this deal go live tomorrow (cyber Monday)? It’s currently showing $55.99 with $10 gift card
It was advertised as a “Cyber Monday” deal on Saturday after Black Friday, so I assumed it was an early release deal. However, maybe it was just a preview and the deal will go live again on Cyber Monday. I would personally wait and check again on Cyber Monday.
It appears that the software needs an Intuit account, so you can no longer share with others?
My (update: wrong) assumption is you can just sign in with a different Intuit account on each device that you install the software. You can install on five different devices.
Here is the e-mail I received earlier this year from Inutuit. Most comments suggest only one Intuit account per license code. Sure, you can install it on FIVE computers, but it seems you need to use the same account.
Hi there,
We’re reaching out to our TurboTax Desktop customers to share an important change to how you’ll install and activate your software this upcoming 2023 tax season.
To install and activate TurboTax 2023 on your computer, you’ll be prompted to sign in to your existing Intuit Account (or create an account if you don’t already have one) before entering your license code. The software won’t install unless you sign in to your Intuit Account online. Importantly, your product license code can only be associated with one Intuit Account.
Your license code will then be stored in your Intuit Account, should you need to install the software again.
If you forgot your user ID or password, or need additional assistance logging in to your Intuit Account, this article will provide you with helpful steps.
For more information on product installation and activation, go to TurboTaxHelp.com.
Thanks for being part of the TurboTax family.
Warm regards,
Thanks for the follow-up, I stand corrected. Looks like they will still allow 5 federal e-files and it’s meant for you to help file taxes on behalf of and/or share with your family/household members that are close to you (i.e not strangers over the internet). So I guess this is their newest way to make it more restrictive. (People in the past might pass around the install disc…) Now, you’d have to trust someone with your Intuit account login details if installed on their computer, or you’d need to have them file the taxes on your computer (if you’re not filing for them).
I read somewhere that deluxe cannot do schedule d which is required for stock sales, is that true?
Desktop/download version Deluxe can do everything. It just may not ask you all the questions in the Easy Step walk through mode. Just go to Forms mode / view and enter the data directly. It will compute fine. Same for schedule C business activity.
It’s confusing but I think it’s the same for 2023: TurboTax Deluxe Desktop software will allow manual entry of all forms, including Schedule D for capital gains and losses. Upgrade to Premier for interview questions. (TurboTax Deluxe online version won’t ask you the interview questions for Schedule D without upgrade to Premier, and it doesn’t allow the manual entry option. So it basically forces you to upgrade to Premier.)

Looks like this deal is a bust. You can buy TurboTax on Amazon for 45.99, or purchase it for 55.99 and get a $10 ‘gift’ card by paying $10 more. Costco has the Premier version for 72.99 + $10 of ‘product credit’.
There is no $10 gift card offer from Amazon
As 5pm 11/27/23
Get if from Costco. Deluxe – $45 (after $11 discount), and you also get a $10 credit to use for in-product add-ons (e.g. State E-filing, Audit Defense).
Bumping this… Fidelity’s page shows I’m eligible for the free TurboTax but it’s not available yet. When it does become available I’ll update it if someone notices first please post here.
